Dysport and Botox are brand names of neuromodulator treatments. They consist of a natural, purified protein that works by relaxing the muscles it is injected into. This relaxation can help with pain management, tension and headaches caused by overactive muscles. Additionally, Dysport Botox treatment can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines by relaxing the muscles that cause them.

Why would someone use Dysport/Botox?
Dysport and Botox treatments are commonly used for both aesthetic and therapeutic reasons. Not only can patients use them to achieve a more youthful appearance, but they can be used to decrease symptoms of clenching/bruxing and tension-type headaches. These have both been found to be contributing factors to a much larger problem known as temporomandibular disorder (TMD). Ask your dentist if you’re interested in learning more about TMD!
Bruxism is the most common contributing factor that we see within our patients. It can lead to aching muscles, headaches, ear pain, jaw pain, disrupted sleep, tooth wear, sensitive teeth and enlargement of the jaw muscles which can actually alter face shape.
By relaxing the muscles responsible for these movements there is thought to be a reduction in the tension placed on our jaw joint and surrounding tissues leading to a relief of symptoms including pain, headaches, damaged teeth, limited opening and more.
The sequence of treatment at our clinic is as follows:
Consultation: Your first appointment will include a consultation with Dr Martinson where she will review your medical history and ensure you are a suitable candidate for this treatment. Once we deem you a suitable candidate, we will discuss your expectations and what areas you are interested in for treatment. At this point we will determine the dosage required for your goals. At consultation we will also take several photographs for our records which helps us make adjustments for future treatment if needed.
Preparation: To begin treatment Dr Martinson will mark any important anatomy and injection sites with a dermal marker. These markings wash off easily and help ensure treatment is introduced into the correct musculature.
Treatment: Using a fine insulin needle the dentist will inject a small amount of Dysport Botox into the target areas. The injections are shallow and typically painless. The entire process lasts from 15-30 minutes depending on the number of areas receiving treatment. Your initial appointment may take longer.
Post-op Care: We recommended patients avoid rubbing the area, laying down, engaging in strenuous exercise or consuming alcohol for the first four hours after treatment.
Possible Side Effects?
Although Dysport is considered safe, some patients may experience mild pain after injection, bruising or swelling, headache or redness of the treatment area.
Areas We Treat at Spruce Dental
Please note dosages vary for each individual and often multiple areas must be combined to achieve optimal results.
When can I expect results?
Results will start to set in within 2-3 days after treatment with the full effect appearing in about 2 weeks.
How long does treatment last?
The length of the effects of Dysport can vary for each individual although they typically last 3-4 months.
Are the injections painful?
The needle is very fine and when paired with our gentle injection technique patients barely feel any discomfort. Injections don’t even require any anesthetic! If a patient is nervous cold packs can be provided to temporarily numb the area.
Are there things I need to avoid after treatment?
Generally, you can resume normal activities right after treatment including returning to work with barely noticeable marks. We do however recommend avoiding rubbing the area, laying down, engaging in strenuous exercise or consuming alcohol for the first four hours after treatment.
Who can’t have Dysport Botox Treatments?
Pregnant or breastfeeding women and individuals with certain neuromuscular disorders.
